Eye Exam Q & A

What is an eye exam?

Eye exams at Brandywine Vision Associates, P.C., evaluate both your vision and your eye health.

Vision exam

Dr. DeAngelis checks your up close and distance vision, evaluates your visual field and depth perception, and performs other tests to determine whether you need vision correction. If you need a new glasses prescription, you get it that same day so you can pick your new frames and lenses right away.

Eye health evaluation

To check your eye health, Dr. DeAngelis typically dilates your eyes using eye drops. Eye dilation opens your pupils widely so Dr. DeAngelis can check the back part of your eyes, including the retina, optic nerve, and tiny veins inside your eyes.

A dilated eye exam allows her to screen for eye diseases, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, and cataracts. Dr. DeAngelis also performs an eye pressure check to screen for glaucoma as part of your eye health evaluation. With early detection of these eye diseases, Dr. DeAngelis can help you prevent vision loss.

The inner-eye evaluation can also detect serious health problems like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes in their early phases.

Along with checking the inner structures of your eyes, Dr. DeAngelis carefully examines the outer structures, including your eyelids and tear ducts. If you're having any symptoms, for example, dry eyes or chronic eye irritation, discuss those concerns with Dr. DeAngelis during your exam so she can find the cause of your issues and recommend treatment.

Unlike a simple vision screening, eye exams at Brandywine Vision Associates, P.C., give you everything you need to see your best while having great eye health.

Can I get new contacts during a comprehensive eye exam?

If you want to wear contacts, Dr. DeAngelis performs a special contact lens exam to measure your eyes and then recommends perfectly fitted lenses. That helps you achieve the best eyesight possible, even if you weren’t born with great vision and even if your vision is worsening.

How often do I need an eye exam?

Dr. DeAngelis recommends Brandywine Vision Associates, P.C., patients schedule an eye exam once a year, in most cases. During your initial appointment, Dr. DeAngelis can recommend a future eye exam schedule that’s ideal for you.

If you’re overdue for an eye exam or need an updated prescription, call Brandywine Vision Associates, P.C., or book your appointment through the online scheduling feature now.
